The six regions of Cyprus
Cyprus may be a small island, but it has plenty to offer visitors. Whether your interest lies in archaeological remains, scenic hikes, or simply chilling out in the sun, Cyprus is the place to be – and, with budget airlines like Monarch servicing Paphos, it’s now possible to pick up cheap flights to this island paradise. If you’re considering spending your summer holidays in Cyprus, here’s a quick guide to the island’s six major regions.
Lefkosia
The city of Lefkosia merges a modern business centre with a historical core – surrounded by ancient Venetian walls and boasting a number of architectural treasures, it nevertheless offers tourists top-class accommodation and infrastructure. In the surrounding countryside you’ll find olive groves and orchards leading up to the pine forest of the Machairas mountains; perfect for rural hikes and relaxation.
Lemesos
The island’s second largest city is both a major port and a popular holiday resort. It features such attractions as the ancient city kingdoms of Amathos and Kourion, and the wine villages of the Troodos Mountains. The area is great for wine tasting, wildlife watching and walking amongst stunning scenery.
Larnaka
A melting pot of Muslim and Christian civilization and architecture, Larnaka is an important place of pilgrimage for both religions. It also holds numerous attractions for tourists, including the nearby listed village of Lefkara and the archaeological remains of a prehistoric settlement at Choirokoitia.
Pafos
Perhaps the most famous of the Cypriot regions, Pafos is where the goddess Aphrodite was held to have risen from the waves. It is therefore popular among honeymooners, and the pretty town with its harbor walk and medieval fort help to reinforce the romantic atmosphere. Attractions include numerous golf resorts, spas and water parks.
Troodos
The most mountainous region of Cyprus, Troodos represents a cool retreat from the heat of the coast. Enjoy exploring the rural villages which nestle amid terraced slopes, and visit the famous painted Byzantine churches of Cyprus – beautiful UNESCO World Heritage sites surrounded by mountain scenery.
Ammochostos
Located on the south-east coast, this attractive region boasts some of Cyprus’s best beaches. It is the home of many of the island’s largest resorts, so it’s also the place to go for clubbing, bars and restaurants. Enjoy snorkeling or diving off Cape Gkreko on the eastern peninsula, or visit the medieval churches found in villages like Sotira.
If you’re planning on travelling to one of Cyprus’s six regions anytime soon, make sure you consider the practicalities. Save on cost by tracking down cheap flights and accommodation on a price comparison site, and arrange details like car hire before you leave. It’s also worth taking out travel insurance to protect yourself and your family against injury and added expense – shop around on sites like AA Travel to find the best deals.
