Cyprus has become famous as a holiday destination due to its beautiful white beaches and all-inclusive resorts – but if you’re looking for something more than a beach holiday then don’t rule the island out. It boasts some stunning scenery for hiking and mountain biking, as well as a sprinkling of historical attractions. Here are a few of the sights that any visitor to the island should take in.
The Medieval walls of Lefkosia.
In addition to being a bustling commercial city, Lefkosia offers one of the most breathtaking attractions in Cyprus. The surrounding walls date back to the 14th century, with additional 16th century alterations added later by the Venetians. They form a circle and are fortified by eleven heat-shaped bastions – a lasting reminder that Cyprus was not always as peaceful as it appears now. The moat around the walls is an attraction in its own right, as it now acts as sports fields, public gardens and exhibition grounds.
Tombs of the Kings
Impressive ancient burial chambers once belonging to the Pafian aristocracy, the Tombs of the Kings are just as impressive as their name suggests. Situated close to the sea in the north western necropolis of Pafos, they are cut out of rock and date to the Hellenestic and early Roman periods. Many are fully preserved and feature a number of burial chambers opening on to a peristyle atrium.
Archbishop’s Palace
The old Archbishop’s Palace is an 18th century two-storey building situated at the heart of Lefkosia. It is located next to the palace of the current archbishop and houses the Byzantine museum and the library of the Archbishopric. As well as an example of stunning Cypriot architecture, the palace has strong cultural and political significant. It’s a must-see for anybody staying or travelling in the Lefkosia region.
Maa-Palaeokastro Settlement
Cyprus has been inhabited since far before the Ancient Greek era, and this Bronze Age settlement is an architectural reminder of that fact. It is located around 10 kilometers from the modern town of Pafos and is distinguished for its imposing defensive walls. Maa was settled by the first Mycenaean Greeks who arrived on Cyrpus, and is therefore considered the nucleus of Hellenic civilization on the island. Visitors can still see the remains of the walls and old settlement.
