Top five Grecian beaches
Calm blue waters, superb weather and excellent infrastructure have combined to make Greece one of the top beach holiday destinations in Europe. Although a proportion of the country’s coasts have been taken over by the inevitable package-holidaymakers, there are still some beautiful and largely unfrequented beaches waiting for you to discover them. If you’re aiming to explore some of Greece’s more remote beaches, then the best way to get around is by car – you can arrange car hire for a reasonable cost from a company like Holiday Autos. Since driving in Greece can be a slightly haphazard business, make sure that your car insurance covers you driving abroad. If not, you can get cheap deals on holiday cover from a company like Co-operative Insurance. So, once you’ve found your vehicle, which Grecian beaches should you visit? Here are five of the very best.
Sarakiniko
Located on Elafonisos Island in the Peloponnese, Sarakiniko is one of the most idyllic beaches in the country. Mostly undiscovered and uncrowded for the greater part of the year, it features long stretches of golden sand, irresistible seas and proximity to two other stunning beaches so you’ll never get bored of the area.
Egremnoi
This Lefkadaian beach combines white sand and turquoise waters with stunning scenery – many tourism guides describe it as ‘true paradise’. The beach’s out of the way location on the west coast of Lefkada, together with the thousand make-shift concrete steps down, mean that it isn’t the easiest place to reach. On the other hand, it is this very fact that gives the beach its charm, since it’s virtually deserted year-round.
Myrtos
It’s not surprising that Myrtos was voted as the best beach in Greece a few years ago. Nestled among the steep cliffs of western Kefalonia, its calm blue waters and bright white pebbles make for the most fabulous holiday snaps. Again, not the easiest beach in Greece to get to – but certainly well worth the effort.
Erimoupolis
If you’re prepared to leave the Grecian mainland, then this beautiful beach is a must-see. Located at the northern tip of eastern Crete, it holds a scenic position next to an ancient cemetery. A visit to this beach is both a relaxing experience and an archaeological delight – the drive to Erimoupolis takes in the abandoned town of Itanos as well as some other more minor ancient ruins.
Myrtidiotissa
Another island destination, Myrtidotissa on Corfu is a beach of unparalleled beauty. The road down is problematic for vehicles, so most drivers choose to park high above the beach near the monastery of Myrtidotissa and walk down a kilometer of dirt track to reach their destination. It’s worth the hike – you come out in a small bay surrounded by tall cliffs, featuring soft brown sand and crystal-clear waters. A visit to Myrtidotissa will really round off your Grecian beach holiday.
